  • Ulcers
  • Inflammation
  • Bleeding
  • Colon Polyps

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure used to find changes or abnormalities in your large intestine, colon, and rectum. Dr. Citro inserts a fiber-optic instrument into your rectum; a miniature camera at the tip of the tools provides images of the inside of your colon.

A study by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York showed that getting a colonoscopy can lower your risk of colon cancer by 50%, so it may well become a part of your preventive care plan.

What are my risks for colon cancer?

You might be in danger of developing colon cancer if you have:

  • A family history of the disease

Aging is another factor that increases your risk. The American Cancer Society states that both men and women starting at age 50 who are thought to be at an average risk of developing colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy every 10 years.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?

Dr. Citro and his staff will give you all the information you need to know to prepare for your colonoscopy. You might be asked to drink lots of liquids and follow a special diet on the day leading up to your exam.

Your heart-rate, breathing, and blood pressure will need to be monitored for a while after the exam, and you’ll need to plan to have someone take you home when you’re ready to be discharged. Dr. Citro or one of his staff will let you know when you’re well enough to leave.
